After writing this by hand in font, I am very happy to have Microsoft Word.

The giant squid is impressed by the number of bagels.

Two of these pets are disappointed at the lack of mango.  The other I think isn't aware of much at all.

Isle of Dogs- Movie Review

Wes Anderson is back at it again with another visually stunning film and his second done in stop motion animation.  This is his ninth film, which was preceded by Grand Budapest Hotel, another critically acclaimed movie.

Isle of Dogs explores the adventure of a pack of exiled dogs on a trash island and a young boy's quest to find his lost pet.  The setting is a near future Japan in the city of Megasaki.  There, the Mayor of Megasaki has banished all the dogs from the city to a remote trash island.

This movie has another great cast of voices including familiars like Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Jeff Goldblum, as well as some new faces like Brian Cranston and Greta Gerwig.

There are some current political themes present in Isle of Dogs.  But to me they were done very tastefully and subtly enough that the movie exists entirely in it own world (a feature Wes Anderson does very well and is known for).  Watched in current historical context these themes are certainly visible but I think 20 years or less from now the film's story will hold its own and, personally, be better for it.

Recently on Twitter, people have been noticing the pun in the title.  When you say 'Isle of Dogs', it sounds almost identical to 'I love dogs'.  Such an idea is certainly not absent from this film.  My original thought when the film and premise were announced, was that Wes wanted to put an official end to the rumor that he hates dogs, based on the way dogs have been treated in his prior films.  It's probably true.

Isle of Dogs is a fun movie that has all the visual and cinematic hallmarks of a Wes Anderson.  It also is not a kids oriented film as Fantastic Mr. Fox was.  The darker elements make this movie better and more adult, which I think is good since Wes' style doesn't seem to grab children's attention as well as movies directly calibrated for kid's attention spans.  Fantastic Mr. Fox was more widely enjoyed by adults than children, even though it was geared more for kids.

Rotten tomatoes gives Isle of Dogs a 92% on the critical rating.  There is no rating yet for the audience score since the film is not yet in wide release.  I caught screening in DC during its limited release.  My rating for Isle of Dogs is on par with the critics of Rotten Tomatoes and I give it my recommendation.

Go see it April 13th!

The artistic editing of this one turned into a picture of a nuclear explosion at night.

I like to draw and listen to podcasts/music.  This time Bug Dog and his insect friend made their appearance.  It looks like someone took a candid snapshot of them.

Went to the nation's capital last week to see Isle of Dogs during its limited release.  I stopped by the Smithsonian national art gallery and was stunned by their beautiful neoclassical dome.  Very reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome.
